課程概述

This course is designed to advance students’ knowledge base of group work practice and their understanding of the six developmental stages of group work. Students will engage in in-class group experiences to solidify their understanding.  

課程目標
 1. To be familiar with the essence of group work practice
2. To understand group dynamics and group leadership
3. To participate in the six stages of group work
4. To understand specialized methods of group work
5. To gain personal insights of group experiences 
課程要求
 1. Punctuality, attendance, and active participation are expected.
2. Reading report: Write a report (3-5 pages, single space) of what you have learn (e.g. group dynamics, leadership, etc.) from the novel, The Schopenhauer Cure, with your personal insights. This report is due on April 9.
3. Session report: Write two reports, with chosen evaluation forms (2-3 pages, single space), to describe your small group experiences. The focuses could include (a) your experience as a leader/member, (b) your usual pattern (thinking, emotion, & behavior) outside the small group, (c) new skills that you practice in the small group, and (d) your gain and insight. This report is due on April 16 & 30.
4. Debriefing group discussion: Actively participate in the discussion after viewing the debriefing training DVDs by raising questions, sharing insights, etc.
5. Small group project: Design and develop a 5-session group (60 minutes each session). The group proposal of the small group is due on April 2. Please refer to appendix D, E, and F as the format of the proposal. As participants in the group, students also take turn to be leaders and participants/observers of the group to experience the six-stage group process. After each group, leaders attend the post-group leaders’ group (40 minutes each) lead by the teaching assistant/instructor to reflect up their leadership experience. The small group presentation includes 30 minutes presentation and 20 minutes discussion. Focuses of the presentation could include overall goal/procedures of the group (5’), group dynamics (20’), and insights/suggestions (5’). While preparing and present, your group is the leader for the whole class. So, be prepared and enjoy!!
